Birth of the Cruel

The reason Radioactive was born was plain and simple: at that point, in the late summer of 1991, there was only one graffiti magazine in Finland (at least that we knew of) entitled as Gasmask, and since it was done by people in Helsinki, the focus naturally was on their own adventures. We wanted to get our own pieces published somehow. A very common story for most DIY publications.

But Gasmask and Radioactive weren’t the only ones. Writers from FTC published a few issues of Whuthafuck magazine, which probably started around the same time as we did — and had much better content, if you ask us. Both Gasmask and Whuthafuck stopped around 1991–1993, leaving us as the sole survivor. At least for a few years.

In 1995, Berlin — a magazine by fellow writers from the nearby Olari area — was established, as well as High Voltage from Helsinki (also by our friends). Even though High Voltage was black and white like us, they actually had a colorful centerfold. And there was more to come. The emerging of new magazines was good for Finland scene, because we were already losing interest with Radioactive.

Later on, Finland produced plenty of graffiti magazines, and by the early 2000’s their quality was far superior to ours: full color, glossy paper, more pages, and better content with greater variety.
